Yesteryear Collection

Wolverhampton’s Town Commissioners approved the formation of the Borough Police Force in 1837. The first police station was situated in the Old Town Hall in Garrick Street, on the site now occupied by the ABC cinema.
Twelve months from the force being formed the total prisoners taken numbered were 1,132. Of these one was transported for life and seventeen for seven years.
The Borough Force remained a separate entity until 1966 when following local government changes it became part of the former West Midlands Constabulary. Then in 1974, following further boundary changes, Wolverhampton became a division within the present West Midlands Police.
